Presbyterian College’s curriculum presents knowledge, teaching care management, and opportunities to demonstrate newly-learned skills. The College of Pharmacy utilizes an applied and integrated model of medication therapy management — a process that helps students understand just how the complex elements of pharmacy fit together. The PharmD curriculum consists of four years.
Using One45’s Curriculum capabilities to build a curriculum map for the College of Pharmacy
The Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy needed a way to map ACPE Appendix 1, their PC10 Competencies, and assessment and instructional methods to their curriculum. In addition, the College required a tool to house the information and report on gaps and redundancies.
Background of Presbyterian’s approach to curriculum mapping
The curriculum mapping initiative started with One45 Software in 2015. When Courtney Kozar, Coordinator of Assessment and Academic Services, joined the program the college was embarking on a self-study for ACPE and looking at the depth and breadth of the curriculum. A key to this was assessing the classes and the standards in each class. There wasn’t a way to assess the depth of each topic so it was decided to go with the approach of mapping to a specific standard. “It’s been a process collecting the data” states
Kozar as last year was the first time they could run accreditation standards reports as they needed to be able to get a sufficient set of data before conducting an analysis. Course changes were addressed, examining the level and learning outcomes and a more comprehensive search to look into those specific areas for improvement. The One45 tool has been very helpful in “creating reports and gaining direct insight into our curriculum” says Kozar, both of which were not previously possible. The faculty are able to see co- curricular topics, goals, and objectives for each topic, and obtain a better understanding of their accreditation and learner needs.
What were the challenges the College faced in driving the need to build a curriculum map?
One of the challenges was streamlining the process of building a curriculum map to ensure consistent data was being captured for more accurate reporting and review of the curriculum. Previous to the adoption of the One45 tools, Presbyterian was using Excel spreadsheets to capture their curriculum mapping data. This worked on a small scale but became time consuming and inconsistent while managing multiple files from numerous stakeholders. These inefficiencies created a need to have a centralized and standardized system of capturing, storing, and utilizing the collected data to make quantifiable changes to the curriculum for the purposes of accreditation and reform. Making sure everyone was on the same page was crucial.
How did One45 help solve these challenges?
Using the One45 reporting feature, Presbyterian was able to address curriculum course changes and better evaluate learning outcomes. The reporting functionality allowed for a much more comprehensive search and analysis. For example, the IPE complement assessment needed certain standards matched. One45’s reporting capabilities provide oversight into interprofessional topics and allow for in-depth reporting on gaps and redundancies within the curriculum.
How did Presbyterian start mapping their curriculum?
Mapping was done reviewing one course at a time. Courtney created a checklist of details that needed review for mapping to complete a course. She worked with each course coordinator to ensure everything was running smoothly. Meetings were held at the start of the semester and the team worked together to gather the information course by course.
What worked well in collecting the data?
It was a process the college had to create, “I have loved complete, my experience with One45 – the and refine as they started data collection. Syllabi were collected from various sources such as Moodle and spreadsheets, with course coordinators reviewing and editing the technical support entered into the One45 system.

How was the decision made on which standardized lists to use?
The list of standards are required for accreditation. It was Courtney’s responsibility to ensure the curriculum was associated with these standards for the purpose of reporting and curriculum review.
What are the next steps for Presbyterian’s curriculum map work?
The college will continue to gather information from this year. Once each course has completed their mappings checklist, they will be reviewed from the student, assessment and standard perspectives. These reports will then be shared with the assessment, curriculum and IPE committees.
How has the curriculum map been beneficial for accreditation requirements?
Presbyterian College had their focused review on-site visit by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education in March 2018. The curriculum map powered by the One45 tool not only gave the School of Pharmacy in depth analysis into their curriculum but allowed them to adopt a standardized and consistent method of mapping ultimately resulting in a successful accreditation.
